Novel food : a new guidance to help applicants to prepare novel food applications

The administrative guidance includes a checklist of the data requirements outlined in EFSA’s “Guidance on the preparation and presentation of an application for authorisation of a novel food”, that applicants should use to verify the completeness of their data. The guidance also contains four summary tables where applicants should summarise the results of the scientific studies provided in their technical dossier.

EFSA strongly recommends applicants to use both the completeness checklist and the summary tables when preparing an application for novel food.

Article published: The SENS algorithm - a new nutrient profiling system for food labelling in Europe

N. Darmon, J. Sondey, V. Azaïs-Braesco, M. Maillot
Eur J Clin Nutr. 2018 Feb;72(2):236-248. doi: 10.1038/s41430-017-0017-6

In cpartnership with Nicole Darmon (INRA Montpellier) and the company MS-Nutrition, we contributed to establish a nutrient profiling system, the SENS (for “Système d’Etiquetage Nutritionnel Simplifié”), devoted to make easier for the consumer the evaluation of the nutritional value of packaged foods. Conceived along the WHO guidelines, this tool is derived from the SAIN LIM, developed by the French Food Safety Agency in 2008 and is based on the energy density and nutrient density of food products. It shows a good discriminating power between and within food categories. The detail of the system has just been published in the European Journal of Clinical nutrition and is available here (http://rdcu.be/CLad). Further publication are planned shortly.
