Recommendations of the Committee of Public Health

On november 6th, the Committee of Public Health published its recommendations for a national Health-Nutrition policy in France in 2017-2021.

As previous programs had not reached their objectives and because social health inequalities have increased, the Committee proposes, while keeping on wit previous strategies, to act on the social and economic environment, in order to make individual choices (food and physical activity) more favorable to health. It recommends regulatory measures to decrease marketing pressure, improve food offers and physical and economic access to foods of better nutritional quality. Advice is given to target specifically and in priority children and low-income groups.

EFSA: Public consultation on the Dietary Reference Values for sodium

EFSA has launched a public consultation on its draft scientific opinion on dietary reference values (DRVs) for sodium.

The authority is seeking feedback on the way it plans to select and use evidence in its assessment. Indeed, EFSA’s Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies (NDA) has developed a protocol describing the steps to be followed for the collection, selection, appraisal and integration of the evidence. This will include the conduction of systematic literature reviews on the relationship between sodium intake and health outcomes such as cardiovascular disease and bone health.

Interested parties are invited to submit comments on the proposed protocol and other parts of the assessment by 12 November 2017.

The draft opinion and protocol will then be revised in light of the comments received and the completed assessment, including recommendations on DRVs, will be made available for a second public consultation.

Dietary Reference Values for riblofavin

The ESFA published in August its finalized scientific opinion on the Dietary Reference Values (DRV) for riboflavin.

Riboflavin (also called vitamin B2) is a water-soluble vitamin that plays an important role in energy metabolism and in the functioning of several enzymes. It can be found naturally in many foods of plant or animal origin including milk, milk products, eggs and offal.

On the basis of the new scientific data available, the EFSA decided to update the DRV for riboflavin established in 1993. The panel defined daily population reference intakes (PRIs) for riboflavin as follows:

  • 0.6 mg for children aged 1-3 years;
  • 0.7 mg for children aged 4-6;
  • 1.0 mg for children aged 7-10;
  • 1.4 mg for children aged 11-14;
  • 1.6 mg for adolescents aged 15-17 as well as for adults;
  • 1.9 mg for pregnant women;
  • 2 mg for lactating women.

For children aged 7-11 months, the panel set an adequate intake (AI) of 0.4 mg per day.

As for other vitamins and minerals, this opinion has been opened to a public consultation before its finalization by the EFSA NDA panel.

Update of guidance on health claims related to antioxidants, oxidative damage and cardiovascular health

EFSA is giving stakeholders and other interested parties the opportunity to comment on the draft update of its guidance for health claims related to antioxidants, oxidative damage and cardiovascular health.

In the dynamic of updating the guidance previously published in 2011, the EFSA published on July 12th 2017 the draft guidance for the scientific requirements for health claims related to antioxidants, oxidative damage and cardiovascular health. In light of the gained additional experience of the EFSA NDA panel in the evaluation of claim applications, and taking into account additional information collected through a grant launched in 2014, the panel decided that a number of key aspects needed further clarification. In particular, the claimed effects which are considered to be beneficial physiological effects, and the characteristics of the human intervention studies which can provide evidence for the scientific substantiation of specific claims addressed in this guidance.

This draft is submitted to public consultation, and interested parties are invited to submit their written comments by September 3rd 2017. The final updated guidance will help applicants in preparing and submitting their health claims for scientific evaluation.

Dietary Reference Values for vitamin K

The ESFA published in May its finalized scientific opinion on the Dietary Reference Values (DRV) for vitamin K.

Vitamin K comprises both phylloquinone and menaquinones. However, insufficient scientific data are available for menaquinones, and therefore, the EFSA has proposed a recommendation for phylloquinone only, set at 1 μg / kg body weight / day for all population groups. Considering the respective reference body weights, the recommendation is proposed to be 70 μg/day for adults, and between 12 and 65 μg/day for children depending on age.

As for other vitamins and minerals, this opinion has been opened to a public consultation before its finalization by the EFSA NDA panel.

OpenFoodTox: EFSA’s new interactive tool for information on chemical hazards

OpenFoodTox is the new EFSA database that provides instant access to information from EFSA scientific outputs about the toxicity of more than 4000 chemicals found in the food and feed chain: pesticides, food additives, flavourings and nutrient sources, feed additives and both natural and man-made contaminants.

You can for instance find information regarding the safe levels set by EFSA scientific panels – such as tolerable or acceptable daily intakes, or information on the critical health effects for risk assessment for humans – such as liver or mammary toxicity.
